gods, we were shoe shopping and one of the shoes the store had had a single-piece knitted upper, and just, i still can't get over modern machine knitting techniques

 badly cropped photo of the side of a shoe. as stated, the upper half is essentially a single knitted piece, even through the texture/color transitions. the only separate pieces are some of the bits where the laces attach, and the pull-tab at the back (not shown)
a close-up of one of the texture transition where it turns into mesh at the front of the shoe. the rows get a bit awkward, but it's still a single knitted piece. the end of the piece of cord that loops the laces is also visible; i think that's also knitted in but it might be sewn
